SIP trunking stands for Session Initiation Protocol, or SIP. It is the method with which a voice over IP (VoIP) call is made. SIP trunking is a virtual version of an analog phone line. The application layer protocol enables real-time audio and/or video communication between two endpoints. Two-way calls or multi-party conferences are created, modified, and terminated between two or more parties on an IP network.

In cases where the business has an on-premises PBX system, the SIP service provider can connect you through the existing system, which will allow your business to make outbound calls. In addition, there is no limit on the number of outbound calls that your business can make.
What To Look for in a SIP Service Provider
- One of the main points to look for when selecting a SIP service provider is their ability to scale their services according to the needs of your business. You may incorporate this service while your company is still in its growing phase or prior to your company scaling down. In both of these cases, you will need a service provider that can add or remove trunks based on the needs of your business.
- In cases where you have existing numbers, check to see if the service provider is able to transfer these numbers to the new provider. This is known as number porting.
- In the event that your area experiences a power failure or network outage, you will need to know what the backup operational mode allows.
